What is the eyewall?
The eyewall is the ring of tall thunderstorms surrounding a hurricane's calm eye. It holds the storm's strongest sustained winds, its most violent gusts, and its heaviest rain. Air spiraling inward rises fastest here, which is why the eyewall, not the eye, brings a hurricane's destructive winds ashore.
The eyewall, defined
A mature hurricane is built around a hole. At the center is the eye, a largely cloud-free column of sinking air, most often 20 to 40 miles across, though eyes range from a few miles to well over 100. Around it sits the eyewall: a ring of thunderstorms whose tops often reach above 50,000 feet.
The eyewall exists because the inflowing air never reaches the center. Air spirals in near the sea surface, gathering heat and moisture from the ocean and, like a skater pulling her arms in, spinning faster as the radius shrinks. That rotation eventually balances the inward pull of the pressure gradient, so the air stops closing in and rises in a ring instead, condensing and releasing latent heat.
That heat warms the core aloft and lowers the surface pressure beneath it, which draws in more air, which rises and releases more heat. Sea surface temperature, ocean heat content, and wind shear set how hard that loop runs; the environment page maps them. The strongest winds sit at the eyewall's inner edge, the radius of maximum winds.
The eye is calm. The storm is not over.
Inside the eye, air sinks, warms, and dries, so clouds evaporate and the sky can open. Winds fall off sharply, sometimes to near calm. People have watched stars come out over a street that was under hurricane-force wind minutes earlier.
That is the halfway point, not the end. The eye may take a few minutes or more than an hour to pass, depending on its width and the storm's forward speed. Then the far side of the eyewall arrives, from the opposite direction, and what one side loosened the other tears off. Going outside during the eye is one of the most dangerous mistakes people make in a hurricane.
Not every storm has a clean eye. A sheared or weakening hurricane can have a ragged, partly open eyewall, and the lull may never be complete. Eyewall replacement cycles
Strong hurricanes rebuild themselves. In an intense storm, an outer rainband can organize into a second ring of thunderstorms tens of miles outside the original eyewall, and for a time the hurricane has two concentric eyewalls.
The standard explanation is that the rings compete for the same warm, moist inflow, and the outer one wins because it reaches that air first. The inner eyewall is starved, weakens, and dissipates. Peak winds drop, so the category can drop with them. But the radius of maximum winds has moved outward, spreading the strongest winds around a much larger circle: more area taking damaging wind, and more water pushed toward the coast.
Then the new eyewall can contract and the storm re-intensify, sometimes past its earlier peak. A category that dips during a replacement cycle is not a storm becoming safer. Models still handle these cycles poorly, one reason intensity forecasts remain less skillful than track forecasts. How the eyewall gets measured
Satellites see the top of the eyewall. To learn what it is doing at the surface, someone flies into it. Air Force Reserve crews fly the WC-130J and NOAA the WP-3D Orion, typically near 10,000 feet: through the eyewall, into the eye, and out the far side.
They measure it three ways. Dropsondes are parachute-borne instrument packages that radio back wind, pressure, temperature, and humidity down to the sea surface. The stepped-frequency microwave radiometer reads surface wind speed from the microwave signature of sea foam below the aircraft. Flight-level wind is converted to a surface estimate with a standard reduction, about 90 percent in the eyewall at 10,000 feet. The crew also fixes the center and measures the minimum surface pressure, one of the few hurricane numbers measured rather than estimated.
Nearer the coast, land-based Doppler radar resolves the ring in detail, including the small mesovortices that can spin along its inner edge. The live map layers the official NHC cone, track, and watches and warnings over it.
Why a wider storm can beat a stronger one
The Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale reports one measurement: maximum sustained wind, averaged over one minute, at a standard height of 33 feet. Category 1 is 74 to 95 mph, Category 2 is 96 to 110, Category 3 is 111 to 129, Category 4 is 130 to 156, and Category 5 is 157 or higher. That is all it is. It says nothing about the width of the wind field, the rain, or how much water the storm pushes ashore, and in 2010 the National Hurricane Center dropped surge and pressure ranges from the scale for exactly that reason.
Charley came ashore near Cayo Costa, Florida, in 2004 as a 150 mph Category 4 with a very compact eyewall: hurricane-force winds reached only about 25 miles from the center, and peak surge ran six to seven feet. Ike hit Galveston in 2008 as a 110 mph Category 2 whose tropical-storm-force winds spanned hundreds of miles, drove 15 to 20 feet of surge onto the Bolivar Peninsula, and flooded communities hours before the center arrived. NHC itself cites that pair.
Katrina weakened from Category 5 through an eyewall replacement and made landfall in southeast Louisiana as a Category 3, but the cycle had already broadened its wind field, and the surge built over open water arrived anyway. The archive holds more than 1,600 Atlantic storms back to 1851.
Who decides what you do
EYEWALL is a viewer, not a warning service. The National Hurricane Center issues the forecasts, watches, and warnings. Your county or parish emergency management office sets evacuation zones and gives the orders. If anything here disagrees with them, follow them.
Two things follow. Expect the eyewall well before the center arrives and well after it passes, and do not go outside during the eye. Decide whether to leave on surge and flood risk at your address, not on the category number; the resources page collects the official links.
